Her journey began in 2015 when she took up indoor volleyball, and she quickly found herself participating in both indoor and beach volleyball. During an interview with Olympics.com, she shared how her indoor coach encouraged her to try beach volleyball, leading her to a development program. Although the transition from indoor to beach volleyball was initially challenging, Tamara adapted quickly, and by 2017, she began competing in tournaments and developed a passion for the sport.

In 2018, Tamara represented New Zealand at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. Though her team didn’t fare well, losing both games, Tamara used this experience as motivation for her future success. Following her Youth Olympics stint, she continued her education and sports career at Westlake Girls High School, where she enjoyed immense success, which ultimately led her to Illinois State University.

Tamara faced a tough freshman year at Illinois State in 2020, struggling to find her footing. However, her breakthrough came in 2021 when she truly burst onto the scene as an attacking force. Tamara played all 33 games that season, amassing an impressive 305 kills with a league-leading average of 4.49 kills per set. These statistics earned her All-American honors, becoming only the eighth Illinois player to receive the distinction.
