The Penn State women’s volleyball team has written a new chapter in history, ending a seven-year drought that many believed would never be conquered. While it seemed like the Nebraska Cornhuskers were set to dominate the Big Ten title once again, Penn State had different plans. In a thrilling showdown at University Park, the Nittany Lions pulled off a stunning victory, creating an unforgettable moment that left their fans in awe.
Coming into the match, the Nebraska Cornhuskers appeared unstoppable. Under the shrewd tactics of coach John Cook, the Huskers not only conquered Wisconsin after eight years but also extended their unbeaten run to 25 matches. Many considered this Nebraska team as the one to beat, holding all the cards with their championship mentality and consistent performances. But the Nittany Lions had something else in mind.
It was Penn State’s night, and it was destined to shine. From the very first serve, the Lions played like they had nothing to lose and everything to prove. They came out with a fiery determination, quickly taking control and never looking back. The Huskers tried their best to respond and showed resilience, notably in the second set when Merritt Beason and Ally Batenhorst made a valiant comeback. However, Penn State’s strategy remained unflinching. The women clinched the next two sets in commanding style, extinguishing any hope Nebraska had of a revival and sealing their victory in dramatic fashion.
The Nittany Lions’ triumph was even more remarkable considering their underdog status, having entered the game as the fourth-seeded team. Not many gave them a chance of taking home the Big Ten Championship, especially after such a long gap of seven years. But in the end, all it took was Camryn Hannah’s match-winning kill to bring the dream alive. Hannah’s determination lit the spark for her team, while Caroline Jurevicius also played a pivotal role, finishing the game with an outstanding 18 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. It was a collective effort, led by players who refused to quit.

“Win B1G title Friday… Celebrate at Beaver Stadium Saturday.” That’s what Penn State Women’s Volleyball tweeted as they shared their joy with fans across the world. The Big Ten title win was one of the finest moments for Penn State volleyball, and undoubtedly a memory that this young and ambitious team will treasure for years to come.
But it wasn’t just the players who made this fairytale victory possible. Behind the scenes, there was one person whose commitment shined the brightest—the head coach, Katie Schumacher-Cawley. Despite facing personal challenges that would have sidelined most, she chose not to give up.
Life threw a curveball at Katie Schumacher-Cawley when she was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 17th. For most, it would have been a moment to step back and focus on recovery. But Cawley is not like most people. The 44-year-old coach chose to continue guiding her team, facing every practice, every huddle, and every game with courage and grace. Supported by her coaching staff and motivated by her players, Katie never wavered in her commitment to the Penn State Nittany Lions.
And what a journey it was. Under Cawley’s leadership, the Nittany Lions registered 28 victories this season—an accomplishment on its own—and finally broke the seven-year curse by winning the Big Ten Championship on November 29th. It was the ultimate tribute to her resilience, her passion, and her determination. Katie Schumacher-Cawley, along with her inspiring team, has etched her name in history as an example of true perseverance and strength.
Today, Penn State’s women’s volleyball team stands tall, both as champions and as symbols of dedication and hard work. Their incredible season will be remembered not just for the trophies won but for the hearts they touched, the obstacles they overcame, and the new heights they achieved.
